iCLEM

The Introductory College Level Experience in Microbiology (iCLEM)

iCLEM is an 8-week paid summer internship program for exceptionally motivated Bay Area youth traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. The program seeks to broaden students' understanding of biotechnology and the careers available in this field. In addition to basic science and research, iCLEM also exposes students to career exploration and preparation for the college application process, including field trips to local biotech companies, career talks with scientists, writing a college statement, meeting with a college admissions officer and financial aid specialist, and visits to colleges. Students are paid a stipend of $1500, plus a scholarship of $500 upon successful completion of the program.

While the application process is rigorous, grades and test scores are not used as gatekeepers. Instead, we place primary importance on the teacher's recommendation and the applicant's genuine desire to conduct research and work hard to learn and master the necessary skills.
